Let me start by saying that I am a carnivore… I love meat! I eat vegetarian at times, but the thought of life without cheese is more than I can bear. So when I was told about the vegan brunch at Gracias Madre, in West Hollywood, I was skeptical, to say the least. How very “California hippy chic”, I thought to myself. But being the adventurer I like to pride myself in being, I tried it.
When I entered I was very impressed by the ambiance. A very crisp and clean mediterranean decor with touches of authentic Mexican details. But, the outside dining is recommended. The patio is enchanting.
The menu includes Mexican plates such as chilaquiles, tofu ranchero scramble, breakfast torta and chimichangas, and traditional brunch fare such as homemade biscuits and warm lemon scones. They are most famous for their french toast (you wouldn’t even know that it’s gluten free and vegan) and house Madre granola.
In true Hollymom spirit, I (of course) loved the cocktails the most. Although they are known for their amazing array of organic tequilas to choose from, you won’t find any Don Julio or Patron here, I enjoyed the seasonal Sangria. So, I’d have to say “when in Los Angeles do as the Californians do” and eat vegan. Well, at least 1 day of your stay.
