The Bodyguard Musical
There’s a new Musical in town and it’s got talent written all over it. Last night the Mr. and I attended a fantastic rendition of “THE BODYGUARD” and it was everything I hoped it’d be. Deborah Cox slayed as Rachel Maddow in a role quite frankly most would be terrified to take on after the late great Miss Houston put her stamp on it back in 1992. Whitney Houston’s performance was imprinted in our minds with the songs and lyrics to back it up.
But last night, in her LA Premiere performance, Deborah Cox belted out those sweet ballads so smoothly to her hunky costar Judson Mills that the audience swooned, proving that our hearts will live on. The play stays fairly true to the screenplay, but the musical, more than anything, plays as a retrospective to Whitney Houston’s musical collection that will be with us forever.
Deborah Cox was so stunning and on point. It reminded me of how much I missed her music for the 90’s. Jasmin Richardson (playing Rachel’s sister, is one to watch as well) she played the “lady waiting in the wings” with such passion and emotional distress, it made her an instant standout. Overall it was a fantastic cast. The US Tour has a completely different members, from London, but they have wasted no time making it their own.
Even though it only has a 21/2 week run at LA’s PANTAGES, it will be in Orange County at the SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS in June. I highly recommend this play. It will take you down memory lane and give you that Broadway feeling all at the same time.
